ABOUT AXE THROWING

What is Indoor Competitive Axe Throwing?

Axe throwing as a competitive indoor sport gained momentum in Canada over the past decade, and became popular in the US over the last few years. Similar to darts, axe throwing is an individual sport played with and against other members of a group. Individual players throw hatchets at wooden targets marked with a bullseye, and points are scored based on where the axe sticks on the target.

How does it work?

Sessions at Portland Axe Throwing last between 1-2 hours. All events start with safety instructions and throwing practice, led by our well-trained coaches in our private throwing area. Once you’ve sharpened your skills, we’ll kick off a round robin tournament, followed by a final knockout round to determine the axe throwing champion. Our coaches will take care of all scoring and coordination of the tournament so you can relax and enjoy the sport. When you book your session online through the website we have an optional add on for a prize axe to be awarded to the winner at the end of the session!

Can I really throw an axe? Really??

You sure can! It has nothing to do with size or strength. Once you land your first bullseye, you’ll be hooked!

Will someone teach me how to do this?

Of course! Our trained coaches will be with you the whole time, supervising every tournament and overseeing every session beginning with safety rules and throwing lessons.

SESSION STRUCTURE

How long does it take?

Depending on your group size, your total event will take 1 to 2 hours. We start with safety instructions and throwing practice.  Please arrive 10 minutes early as your session begins promptly at your reservation time. First time participants can expect to spend the first 10-20 minutes (depending on group size) going over safety rules and learning how to throw. Our instructors will then teach your group the rules of an axe throwing match and host a tournament.

What if I want to rent the whole place?

We do offer space rentals for extended throwing time and larger groups – email us for more information info@portlandaxethrowing.com.

GROUP SIZE

How large of a group can you accommodate?

We have had groups as large as 85 people in to throw, and mobile events with many more than that! For large group inquiries please email us at info@portlandaxethrowing.com.

What if my estimate is in between two group sizes? Which size should I book?

We always recommend booking the bigger size. This may require a slightly larger deposit, but it is much easier for us to decrease the booking size as you get closer to the date than it is to increase it if our schedule has already filled up!  If you think your group will be over 12 we strongly suggest booking for that number or more as you’ll want both lanes!

What if more people want to come after I have already booked my reservation?

The group size range that you booked tells us how long the session needs to be. As long as your number of participants stays within your group range, you’re good to go. Group ranges are 1-6 people for 1 hour,  4-9 people for 1.5 hours and 4-20+ people for 2 hours.  If you think you might go over, let us know as soon as possible by emailing info@portlandaxethrowing.com so we can try to fit everyone in!

How do I schedule a team-builder or corporate event?

Check out our online bookings at www.portlandaxethrowing.com or send us an email at info@portlandaxethrowing.com!  We host 4-6 company outings a week and have various options depending on the size of your group. We can also do sessions outside of our regular operating hours.

What if I don’t have a group, how can I participate?

You can throw! Please visit www.portlandaxethrowing.com to check our online schedule or email info@portlandaxethrowing.com to inquire. If you are interested in 1 on 1 training please send us an email!

SESSION AVAILABILITY

I’m trying to book for today! Do you have availability right now?

If you checked online and don’t see availability it is always worth a shot to email or text us to check as sometimes we do have last minute sessions open up. The best way to get in touch with us is via email at info@portlandaxethrowing.com. We will do our best to get you in! Sometimes even if the schedule is full there are last minute cancellations, so we will add you to the waitlist for that given day.

Do you allow spectators?

Yes we do! Our space does have some seating available behind the targets for spectators tagging along with the group. However, priority is for those throwing, and if there are more than 10 folks in the axe throwing space spectators will be asked to leave.

Definitely, you will want to remember your first bullseye. We’d also love for you to tag us on Instagram or Facebook!
